Libraries for All

At Barking and Dagenham Libraries, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that libraries should be welcoming spaces where everyone - regardless of age, ability, background, or circumstance - can learn, explore, and thrive.

Our mission is simple: to remove barriers and create opportunities for all members of our community. Whether you’re visiting for books, digital resources, events, or simply a quiet space, we want you to feel comfortable and supported.

On this page, you’ll find information about the inclusive features and facilities available across our libraries, including:

  • Accessible buildings and services for people with mobility needs
  • Assistive technologies for those with visual or hearing impairments
  • Sensory-friendly spaces designed for neurodiverse visitors
  • Inclusive programmes and activities that celebrate diversity and promote community engagement

We are committed to making our libraries safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. If you have specific needs or require additional support, our friendly staff are always here to help.

Together, let’s make our libraries places where everyone belongs.

The following services are available across our libraries. Please click on each service to learn more, or use the links provided above to explore in detail.

The Vision and Print Impaired People’s Promise (VPIPP)

At Barking and Dagenham Libraries, we believe that reading and information should be accessible to everyone - regardless of visual or print impairments. That’s why we proudly support The Vision and Print Impaired People’s Promise (VPIPP), a national commitment to ensuring that blind, partially sighted, and print-disabled individuals can fully engage with public library services.

VPIPP outlines the experience that people with vision and print impairments should expect when visiting a library. It’s not just a promise - it’s a call to action for libraries to be inclusive, imaginative, and empowering. Read More
